How to Use an ATM Safely
When using an ATM, it’s important to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect yourself from potential threats.
- Be aware of your surroundings, especially when it is dark. If you detect or sense suspicious persons or circumstances, cancel the transaction immediately and leave.
- Have your ATM card ready and in your hand as you approach the ATM. Avoid waiting until you get to the ATM to take your card out of your wallet or purse.
- Visually examine the ATM for signs of skimming devices. Look for sticky residue or traces of adhesive, scratches, misaligned or damaged components, loose or additional attachments on the card slot, or unusual resistance when using the keypad.
- Shield your Personal Identification Number (PIN) at the ATM. Use your other hand or body to cover the ATM keyboard when entering your PIN.
- Avoid counting or displaying any money received from the ATM in public. Immediately place the money into your pocket or purse and count it later, when you reach a safe and secure location.
- When using an indoor ATM that requires your card to open the door, avoid letting anyone that you do not know come in with you.
- When using a Drive-up ATM, keep your engine running, lock all your doors, and close all windows except your own.
