That Text About Overdue Toll Charges Might Be A Scam

Have you received a text message notifying you of unpaid tolls? The text message may say that you need to pay the toll to avoid a late fee and includes a link for payment.

This is a typical text scam that can lead to a phishing attack, where the scammers try to obtain your payment, credit card numbers and personal information.

To spot and avoid text scams about a fake toll:

  • Slow down. Don’t rush to click on links or respond to the text.
  • Check with the tolling agency. To validate the text, check with the state’s tolling agency. Use a phone number or website you know is real — Do not use the info from the text received.
  • Report unwanted text messages. Use your phone’s reporting or blocking option to report these unwanted texts.
  • Don’t engage. Delete the message. Unwanted messages often lead to scams. Do not engage. Delete the text message.
